Makoto Yabe's work beautifully exemplifies the transmission of Japanese ceramics to the West. Born in Fukishima, Japan in 1947, Yabe began studying ceramics in Kyoto at the age of nine. He completed his training at the age of 24, with a four-year apprenticeship with Jinmatsu Uno and Sango Uno. Yabe then came to Boston, where he gained quick acceptance from the local ceramic community and yet maintained his Japanese roots. Yabe worked as an instructor of ceramics in the Boston area at numerous schools and universities, touching the lives of all his students and expanding their knowledge and love of pottery.
His work has been exhibited at and collected by museums throughout the United States, including the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Cleveland Art Museum.
Sadly, we mourn the loss of Makoto on the 23rd of May, 2005. We welcome any reflections and remembrances about Makoto and his work. We will continue to represent the collection of works here in the Gallery.
