Art: One of the 20th century’s great abstract ceramic sculptors, Zauli began his career as a potter in Faenza making elegant vases with superb modernist form. In the 1960’s, tearing apart one of these vessels, he sensed a new direction both organic and sculptural and began to make powerful sculpture glazed with his signature “Zauli white”, a foamy glaze that trapped carbon giving his work a blush of grey to black. He showed extensively throughout Italy and also had a strong following in Japan where his work was particularly admired. His legacy is represented in Museo Carlo Zauli, Faenza dedicated to his art and to exploration of new ideas and materials. Representation: Garth Clark Gallery in the USA.
